It feels weird writing two entires in a single day, almost cheating… Last night I decided that instead of sleeping, I would try and play with file systems. I wanted some way to transfer files from my machine to my home directory on Museum, and that took some doing.
I know nothing about non-Windows file systems, except that for some reason, fragmentation never seems to be a problem on Linux. I woder how it gets around that? Anyway, I know that mounting a linux file system on a windows machine or vice versa isn’t as simple as it sounds. I searched around on the web for a bit, coming accross a site called LinuxQuestions.org. The forums here amused me, for the site descirbed itself as a place where ‘newbies’ can come to have their questions answered. After reading several posts, it appeared to me that those who asked complex questions got the answers they were looking for, while true newbies with simpler questions got referred elsewhere, or were given answers in the form of “Try searing google for x”, where x is a single word or phrase that in itself meant nothing at alll.
For example, discovering a post asking a question on mounting a Windows share directory on Linux, the answer they were given was “Search for Samba”. They original poster replied, stating that “He didn’t dance”, and that answer was not very helpful at all. The poor guy then got several K-Posters (1000 posts+) flaming him saying that the answer given was enough help for his question.
It makes me wonder what some people classify an answer as these days. If you were in a restaurant, and asked a waiter if the lobster was good tonight, and he said, “Try asking the other patrons”, that’s not an answer!
To make a long story short, I managed to mount a windows directory on /mnt on Museum. You can now see the Windows backgrounds I made on the front page. I like them, Melchior’s especially. I had to do some research into esoteric religions and freemasonry. I’m not quite sure where this passion for mystic diagrams came from, perhaps it sprouts from my interest in the writings of H. P. Lovecraft…
Yay! My first responsibility conflicts as a blogger! Woo! I should really do some coursework, or I will die. I never thought the firemen’s strike would affect me, but it has. The server I need to ssh into at university has been shutdown over the strike period, which means I can’t do my work!
