Cleaning Stick

March 1st, 2003 12:00

Ah, a new month, a new bunch o’ stuff. I was up late last night (see new picture on front page), waving my cleaning stick at the site. I also designed a new theme, I decided to try a white background for a change, and after my rubbish initial attempts, I managed to tweak it to something kinda nice. Having a white background made me want to change the title graphic, so I did. Now each theme has its own. My fave is the RPG one, the characters are from Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI.

I thought it would cool to let someone else have a go at skinning my site, so I’ve prepared a little guide that I’ll point people to if anyone shows any interest:

How Dave’s site works

Thanks to my almost pious regard for nice and tidy XHTML code, the place has a fair amount of solid structure to it. It’s been designed so that the content and the method have been separated, so either can be manipulated individually without causing too much bongoness. Most of the appearance-related code is done in CSS, I have a different StyleSheet file for each theme. Without a stylesheet loaded, the site will just appear as bare text in tables.

The tables are currently set up like this:

Topleft Top (Header) TopRight
Midleft Mid (Content) Midright
Bottomleft Bottom Bottomright

Essentially, the only graphic design done are the table images. The corners should be square to make things easy, and upto a size of 40 pixels across (larger sizes may break stuff at the moment). The edges should ideally be small, and repeatable horizontally/vertically. The title graphic can only be 600×75px at the moment, but I’ll be experimenting with different sizes later.

Apart from the graphics, you might like to change font size, colour, or style. The buttons, scroll bars and text boxes can also be altered, so you can specify those if you like. For those who don’t fancy scripting an entirely new StyleSheet, just give me the images and tell me what you’d like done.

I’ll upload any creations that people come up with, so have a go!
