Titles Sucked Before They Were Invented

Hmm… Been fairly busy today. I skipped morning lectures so that I could continue work with my digger project. Well, that’s a half-lie, I skipped morning AND afternoon lectures so that I could get a lie in, and work on my digger project. This piece of coursework is possibly the most complicated task I’ve ever undertaken, but also the most interesting. It involves writing code that will connect to a remote server, and receive images from two cameras in the digger ‘arena’. Once you can see the toy digger robot, you should let the user send commands to make the digger move about, and fetch a ball.

That’s just for this term. Next term, we have to apply a certain amount of image recognition, that allows the robot to track, locate and pick up the ball by itself. At the moment, I’m just concerned with understanding how Delphi handles sockets, threads, and memory streams. This is all advanced stuff that I’ve never been taught before, and there are no lectures or tutorials to cover this material. I suppose it’s a good learning exercise, as I tend to remember what I teach myself.

Gonna stick Linux on my laptop (Balthazar)! Tonight I am moving files off Balthazar to Melchior (desktop b0x), in getting ready to cleanse the brick of Windows. Perhaps this is once step closer to becoming a l33t L1nUx Ma5t0r??? I still don’t know which distribution I’m going to go for, although I was pretty certain I wanted Mandrake at one point. It’s just whenever I come accross these distribution comparisons, Mandrake is always passed off as being the newbie version of linux, simply because it has a clever ‘does it all’ installer. So, if you want to be hardc0re, you have to go for Debian, because it is really scary. We shall see…

Oh yeah, I GOT A DOMAIN! Woo! From now on, my site will be hosted at www.revengeful-lobster.com. (It always bugs me to end a sentance with a domain name, I just don’t think English grammar was ever meant for nouns with full stops in). The name itself is a lyric from a song called Ride on Shooting Star, by a Japanese band called The Pillows. They performed the amazing soundtrack from the equally amazing anime, Furikuri.

I suppose this means I’m going to have to spruce up the site, as someone might actually see it one day. I’ll say a few things about HTML design, as I said I would in my first post. First off, I don’t believe in any assistance when it comes to wrting HTML. So that means no Frontpage or Dreamweaver, everything I write has to be done in a text editor. By the way, I use gVim, a graphical port of Vim, which is the ‘improved’ version of vi, a fairly popular text editor in Linux. I love it to bits, but simply because it was the first editor I was taught to use.

So, I like to know what HTML does, when I put it on the web. As for the tags that I use, I never use <B> or <I>, or define font size in the <FONT> tags. This is because when you use bold, italics or specific font sizes, you are telling viewers what to see. In my opinion (this “opinion” was generously donated by the E2 HTML guide), it would be better to use tags that suggest a format of display, rather than force it.
